One of my dreams is to have a koi pond in my backyard. I love koi fish for their colorful stripes and graceful movements in the water. Since it is a pipe-dream for now, I thought it the next best thing would be a large gazing ball with lots of koi swimming around it. Here is a page from my sketch book of some koi and lily pads that I used as a model sheet.

Images of the lily pads and koi are transferred to a 3-D model (a small basketball wrapped in masking tape). Top of sphere is shown in this picture. Model is sitting next to 15" concrete ball (hollow inside; rubber playground ball wrapped with fiberglass tape and 2 layers of concrete). I decided to start with the bottom first. Top will be covered with smalti.
